San Bernardino County begins testing low emission units and has sights set on hydrogen-power

In this video, San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) reports on the latest developments in its Redlands Passenger Rail Project (Arrow), which is a nine-mile rail development connecting San Bernardino and Redlands in California.

The overall aim of the project is to bring state-of-the-art clean rail technology to one of the world’s busiest transportation corridors later this year.

Arrow initially will feature low-emission diesel multiple units (DMUs), followed by North America’s first zero-emission hydrogen-powered trains (ZEMU). A few months ago, three DMUs were delivered to the new Arrow maintenance facility in the City of San Bernardino. Crews have assembled the DMUs, and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) has begun testing them on the new 9-mile corridor.

SBCTA’s aim is to have hydrogen-powered trains running on the network by 2023.
