Canadian Pacific’s chief engineer presents its hydrogen locomotive prototype

Kyle Mulligan, chief engineer at Canadian Pacific Railway, speaks to Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) about the railway’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program, following the news that it has been awarded a CA$15m (US$12m) grant from ERA's Shovel Ready Challenge program.

Canadian Pacific Railway is transforming the way it delivers freight across North America through its innovative Hydrogen Locomotive Program. As part of the project, the rail company is converting five diesel locomotives to hydrogen-electric to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Once the trains are converted, the program has the potential to reduce 2.5 kilotons of CO2 emissions every year and significantly reduce emissions across its entire fleet. ERA committed CA$15m (US$12m) to the CA$33m (US$27m) project through its Shovel-Ready Challenge, which provided CA$176m (US$137m) to 16 projects worth a combined value of CA$2bn (US$1.6bn) in public and private investment.
