Turkish construction firm Yapı Merkezi has held the ground-breaking ceremony for the third phase of Tanzania’s new electrified Dar es Salaam – Mwanza Railway project. According to the firm, the railway line will be the fastest ever to be built in East Africa – the project will be delivered in 46 months.

Phases one and two have already been completed, with the third phase stretching from Makutupora to Tabora. In addition to all infrastructure works, the construction of the 368km railway between the cities of Makutupora and Tabora, the construction of a total of eight passenger and freight stations, the signaling, telecom and electrification works of the line will all be carried out by Yapı Merkezi on a turnkey basis in the project worth US$1.9 billion.

Erdem Arıoğlu, vice chairman of Yapı Merkezi Construction said, “We are proud to accomplish yet another successful project in Africa. Our company has already undertaken the construction of the first two phases of the Dar es Salaam – Mwanza Railway in Tanzania, which will be the fastest railway in East Africa.”

The Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway will link Tanzania to the neighboring countries of Rwanda and Uganda, as part of the East African Railway Masterplan. The new electrified lines will replace the old, inefficient meter-gauge railway system.

Phase one connecting Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and phase two connecting Morogoro to Makutopora have already been completed.
