Renfe launches fifth start-up accelerator call to identify sustainable rail mobility projects

Spanish passenger rail operator Renfe has launched a new call for projects as part of its TrenLab start-up accelerator program, which aims to promote technological and environmental innovation in the field of rail transport.

According to Renfe, the winning start-ups will have the opportunity to win a contract of up to €1m for the deployment of their project with the rail operator. The four previous TrenLab calls have attracted more than 900 start-ups, with 17 obtaining financing.

In this call, the accelerator program is seeking start-ups that respond to six new challenges, including ecological transport and fleet optimization, as well as mobility in the metaverse, the digitization of security systems, virtual reality training and industry 5.0.

The call for projects for this edition of TrenLab is open until May 4, 2023, and is aimed at start-ups and companies at both a national and international level.

In the area of ecological transport, Renfe is looking for solutions that encourage the daily use of rail transport, help to clean the air in underground stations, and those that are seeking to develop technologies for cleaner and more energy efficient propulsion systems.

With regards to fleet optimization, Renfe is looking for technological solutions that allow the optimization of the rolling stock fleet to improve efficiency to improve the planning of transport networks and services, offering a better service to passengers.

The winning start-ups will be given up to €50,000 to develop a pilot of their project. They will also receive specialized business mentoring from Renfe for the advancement of the pilot, with advice from experts in legal, sales, technology, communication and much more. 

Additionally, they will have specialized training, workshops, and masterclasses, being able to participate in key events of the entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem together with TrenLab.
