ÖBB orders 70 electric multiple units to further expand its fleet

Austrian rail operator ÖBB has ordered the first 70 multiple units from a framework agreement for up to 540 electric multiple units for local and long-distance transport with Siemens Mobility.

Of these, 11 are local trains in the 73m variant and 28 are 106m trains for use in various federal states. 31 sets for long-distance transport within the Alps complete the first call-off.

The current order is worth over €800m, and the first sets will be in service from the end of 2027.

“With the 70 additional multiple units, we are consistently continuing our investment program in a modern fleet. The new trains have a top speed of 160km/h and offer increased passenger comfort, barrier-free entrances, the possibility of taking bicycles with them and Wi-Fi. In addition, a special focus was placed on efficient energy consumption,” said ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä.

Tanja Kienegger, CEO at Siemens Mobility Austria, added, “We are increasing the high level of passenger comfort of the internationally established trains by designing the carriages even wider and equipping the train with additional chassis. With our technologies, we combine cost-effectiveness for ÖBB, sustainability for the environment and a particularly high level of ride comfort for passengers.”

One of the ways in which the new trains achieve greater sustainability is through the use of a natural refrigerant for air conditioning. In addition, the use of heat pump technology and lightweight construction reduces energy consumption to a minimum.
