Alstom and MAV-Vagon, the rolling stock maintenance and manufacturing unit of Hungary’s state-owned MAV-Volan group, have signed a contract worth €3m for the overhaul of the bogie frames of 25 Traxx electric locomotives, part of the MAV-Start fleet.

The project, which is expected to be completed over three years, aims to improve the quality and reliability of the rolling stock, and increase the safety and efficiency of rail transport.

The work required for the overhaul will be carried out jointly by the two companies: MAV-Vagon will be responsible for the refurbishment of the bogies, dismantling and reassembling the gears, while Alstom will provide the overhaul of the engines and the supply of new axles and wheelsets.

For the works, the locomotives will be immobilized one by one and will be put in service afterwards. The bogies are dismantled, assembled, and commissioned at MAV Vagin’s headquarters in Szolnok, Hungary, while the associated engine overhaul will be carried out in Hennigsdorf, Germany.

The first shipment of the engines to be renovated left Szolnok on December 12, 2023. After the repairs, they are expected to arrive back in the first quarter of next year and be installed in the renovated bogies.

The Traxx locomotives are the youngest electric locomotives in the MAV-Start fleet and together they have already covered more than 60 million kilometers.
