With Metro Atlanta’s population expected to rise from 6 million to 8 million by 2050, MARTA is focused on creating a more connected, reliable, and sustainable transit network.
MARTA’s general manager and CEO Collie Greenwood set the tone for this transformation by debuting the first CQ400 train. Greenwood arrived at Lindbergh Station aboard the new railcar, marking a significant milestone for the transit agency. Calling it a step into the future, Greenwood emphasised that the new railcars would provide a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable experience for riders. “These new railcars are an inspiration to everyone at MARTA and to our customers who will get to experience a cleaner and safer ride – and hopefully one that shows them how transit can make their lives easier and their trip more enjoyable,” he said. “The future of transit begins now at MARTA, and the State of MARTA is strong.”
MARTA’s strong financial standing is driving its ambitious projects. Fitch Ratings recently upgraded MARTA’s bond rating to AA+, while Kroll and S&P reaffirmed its AAA rating, reinforcing confidence in the agency’s long-term stability. At the event, Greenwood detailed several major initiatives designed to modernise and expand service. The new CQ400 railcars feature open gangway designs, improved lighting and seating, digital displays, charging stations, and upgraded safety measures. These trains, set to begin testing later this year, symbolise MARTA’s commitment to modernisation and innovation. Greenwood also discussed the implementation of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC), a state-of-the-art technology that will enhance rail efficiency, safety, and reliability
Sustainability is also a key focus for MARTA’s future. The agency is introducing a fleet of zero-emissions buses for its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, featuring wireless charging and ADA-friendly platforms. As part of the NextGen Bus Network, MARTA is expanding frequent service routes from five to eighteen corridors, improving service for thousands of riders. A $1 billion investment is also underway to upgrade all 38 rail stations, including a major overhaul of Five Points Station to create a modern transit hub.
As Metro Atlanta prepares to host major events such as the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Super Bowl, MARTA’s investments will play a critical role in ensuring seamless transportation for millions of visitors. MARTA board chair Jennifer Ide reinforced the agency’s commitment to shaping the future of transit in the region. “We are breaking ground, launching innovative services, and expanding our system to meet the needs of our growing region. Together, we’re building a brighter, more connected future for metro Atlanta.”
