Egypt’s first city-based electric multiple unit (EMU) has begun trial passenger operations in the 10th of Ramadan city as part of the country’s ambition to make travelling easier and more sustainable between Cairo and the New Administrative Capital.

CRRC noted that the EMU is equipped with modern technologies and works well in the desert environment, which features sand, dust, high temperatures and strong sunlight. It has also been designed and manufactured according to multiple advanced international standards, and its performance has reached the advanced international level, according to CRRC.

The 10th of Ramadan railway project consists of 12 stations with a total length of 70 km and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The line connects the 10th of Ramadan region to Egypt’s New Administrative Capital.

The EMU supply contract between China and Egypt was signed in 2018, and the first EMU rolled off the line in 2021, with delivery starting thereafter. Before operations begun, the EMU went through onsite routine tests and type tests in Egypt for around six months.

When the EMU is put into operation, the train will become an important means of transport between Cairo and the New Administrative Capital, making travelling easier for close to five million residents in more than 10 satellite cities along the line.
