Croatia’s state-owned railway company HZPP has signed a €17.2m contract with railway vehicle manufacturer Koncar Electric Vehicles for the purchase and delivery of battery electric trains and six charging stations along the railway network of the Republic of Croatia.

The contract is part of Croatia’s “Application of green technologies in railway passenger transport” project, which is included in the 2021 – 2026 National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and has a 20-month implementation period.

The contract includes the delivery of a battery electric multiple unit (BEMU), which will operate in passenger transport along the electrified and non-electrified railway lines in the Republic of Croatia. It will be powered by batteries along the non-electrified railway lines, while the classic pantograph power system will be deployed along the electrified railway lines. The batteries will be charged either from traction with the electric overhead lines or from energy storage devices.

Meanwhile, battery multiple units (BMUs) will operate in passenger transport along the non-electrified railway lines in the Republic of Croatia. They will be powered by batteries charged at energy storage devices. The devices will be installed at railway stations in Split, Osijek, Varaždin, Bjelovar, Virovitica and Pula.
