Bulgaria’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a new market research project exploring the delivery and maintenance of new electric multiple units (EMUs), including battery-powered trains, and ETCS on-board equipment as part of the country’s green transition plan.

The one billion Bulgarian Lev (US$548m) project, which is funded by Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, will include 42 electric trains, 20 push-pull electric trainsets, 18 electric-battery shunting locomotives, and 108 ETCS on-board equipment pieces.

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Transport and Communications is now inviting all parties interested in the project to send their proposals in by June 16, 2022.

Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan supports the green transition through ambitious reforms, including the adoption of a clear framework for the coal phase-out, binding commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions of the power sector by 40% by 2025, and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources.

In the area of transport, the plan includes a sizeable allocation (€666m) to decarbonization measures such as the introduction new electric rolling stock for sub-urban and inter-regional rail transport; the construction of a new section of the Sofia metro; a sustainable urban mobility pilot scheme with purchase of zero-emission public transport vehicles and charging station infrastructure.

The rail market research project is divided into five proposal areas, which are published on the Centralized Automated Information System. To find out more click here.
