ADIF to invest €32m in electrification improvement works in Catalonia and Aragon

Spanish state-owned railway infrastructure manager ADIF is to invest more than €32m to increase the functionality, availability, and reliability of the electrification system in the conventional gauge network in the Catalonia and Aragon regions in Spain.

The project includes the implementation of a “remote control plan” for disconnectors – devices like switches, which are used in high-voltage electrical installations – in an area that includes the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, Huesca and Zaragoza, and part of Teruel and Tarragona.

The investment will make it possible to remotely control the operation of disconnectors on the electrification system from a central point. According to ADIF, the final objective is that when an incident occurs, the resolution time of the detected anomalies can be reduced.

As result of the investment, operations will be much faster, avoiding major delays in railway traffic, while increasing the safety of operators and rationalizing maintenance work, by reducing the times of the maneuvers necessary to resolve damages to these elements.

The project is estimated to take around 57 months – six months to draft the project plan, nine for project supervision and technical approval, and 47 months for the execution of the works.

The works will be carried out by railway equipment manufacturer Enclavamientos y Senalizacion Ferroviaria Enyse and electric power provider Control y Montajes Industriales Cymi.

“The works will be carried out at stations, forks, or at derivations of the conventional gauge network in this area through the installation of disconnectors with monitored drives, new centralized remote-control systems, the laying of a new wiring network and the construction of new technical buildings where necessary, among other operations,” ADFI noted.
