ÖBB orders additional 27 modern electric multiple units, encouraging modal shift

Austrian rail operator ÖBB has announced that it has ordered an additional 27 electrical multiple units from Siemens Mobility, as it seeks to ensure it has a modern and sustainable fleet for transport within Austria.

The trains on order are the Siemens Desiro ML units. A total of 246 vehicles of this type have already been ordered by ÖBB and more than 200 of them are already being used successfully throughout Austria.

The new trains are set to be put into operation in 2025 for use on the inner-Alpine routes, according to ÖBB. “This will make switching from car to train and rail even more attractive for passengers and commuters,” the firm noted.

The new three-part trains have a maximum speed of 160km/h, seating capacity of around 220 and feature a modern traveler information system with real-time information on in-cabin monitors.
